Introducing artist, Jaci Hogan…

I met artist Jaci Hogan earlier this year at the Country Living Fair in London and was immediately taken by her beautiful floral paintings.

She produces almost all of her work in acrylics, which helps to create strong and vibrant colours that are her hallmark.

As well as a range of cards, Jaci’s created a range of products featuring her floral artwork including limited edition prints, aprons, bags, tea towels, table mats, glass platters and coasters that all would make wonderful gifts.

Today’s post features just a few examples of her floral paintings.

Jaci very kindly answered a few questions for me:

When did you start your business and where are you based?

I’ve been painting professionally for the past 18 years.  I’m from Queensland in Australia, where the flowers are tropical.

When I came to the UK (Wiltshire) 10 years ago, I was so excited by the lovely spring flowers here, as well as the ever-changing variety of flowers, that I wanted to paint them.

My style being very bold, I wasn’t sure if I could capture the delicate flowers, but I was so inspired by them that I went for it.

Where do you get your floral inspiration for your designs?

At this time of year I’m busy with the flower shows starting with Chelsea Flower Show and then Hampton Court in July.  While at the flower shows, I tend to take the opportunity to photograph the flowers as they are some of the best specimens by the best growers.

But I also paint from live flowers in the studio, depending on what’s in season.  I have to rely on photos sometimes though because the seasons can be so unpredictable.

What are your plans for 2011?

I’m launching a range of bone china this year with Jersey Pottery with 2 designs – agapanthus and hydrangea, both in blue and white.

Do you have a favourite flower?

I don’t really have a favourite flower, but am known for painting agapanthus flowers.  However,  I love painting tulips because they come in such a large variety of colours and types.

Jaci has a great website and on it, you’ll find details about her painting workshops which she holds in Wiltshire. So, if you’re interested in learning how to paint flowers, why not book a place?

Oh, and do look out for her stand if you’re going to the RHS Chelsea or Hampton Court Flower Shows!
