Ode to ranunculus…a stunning spring flower

Georgianna-Lane-Ranunculus

Whilst ranunculus are still in season, I thought I’d feature a blog post purely dedicated to them with stunning images by Georgianna Lane.

Along with peonies, they are one of my favourite flowers. But why do I love them so much…

Well, first it’s their pure prettiness with layer upon layer of petals.

Secondly, because of their limited availability.  They’re generally only in season from October through to May…which means that I have to make the most of them whilst they’re around.

It’s also due to the huge variety of colours that they come in, from pastel pinks to vibrant cerise, white and magenta to orange and yellow.

And they’re not readily available when they are in season…you’ll generally only find them in florist shops as opposed to supermarkets.

I also love watching them bloom, emerging from tight petals.  And as florist Paula Pryke has said, they tend to look at their very best, just before they are about to ‘go over’.

Here are some more of Georgianna’s beautiful images…

So, if you’re thinking of bringing some colour into your home this weekend to banish the grey days we’ve been having in the UK recently, why not treat yourself to some ranunculus?

I promise you won’t be disappointed…

P.S.  If you’d like to read more about this remarkable flower, here’s a link to a blog post I wrote about them last year.

Undoubtedly high up there in my list of top 5 favourite flowers. Here is RSA mine are just peeping up above ground. With our bright sunny days they flower fantastically for weeks on end – I bring them into every room, such a treat! Looking forward to reading your stats this week – think this might be your most popular post – everyone, it seems loves the Ranunculus! Enjoy your weekend!

My daughter has just given me an early birthday pressies of two ranunculus, and, I have just noticed one still in pot growing from last year.
Are they hardy enough to put in the ground?
    Thanks Lesley

Hi Lesley. I’m not 100% sure as I’ve never planted them outside. Having done a little bit of searching on Google, it appears to depend on which particular variety you have…some are hardy and some semi-hardy. Hope this helps?
