Book Review of Flower Arranging by Judith Blacklock

I was delighted to recently receive a review copy of ‘Flower Arranging – The Complete Guide for Beginners’, a new book by Judith Blacklock.

It’s written for anyone with a love of flowers, whether you’re interested in contemporary or traditional designs.

Judith’s introduction really resonated with me.  She says: ‘Contrary to many preconceptions, you really do not have to be artistic or to study for years to be able to arrange flowers.  If you follow the straightforward, logical instructions in this book, you will soon be able to create designs that will give delight.’

What also appealed to me about Judith’s book is that it’s a very comprehensive guide covering all the basics, and more, that you need to know…whether you’re a complete beginner or have little floristry experience.

The chapters include:

  • 1. Choosing plant material and making it last
  • 2. Mechanics, sundries and accessories
  • 3. The elements and principles of design
  • 4. Flowers in a vase and handtieds
  • 5. Classic design
  • 6. Contemporary design
  • 7. Wedding flowers

In the first chapter, there’s an A-Z of flowers with descriptions and images…Judith-Blacklock-Flower-Arranging-Book

There are beautiful images of floral designs throughout the book including this Christmas door wreath…

And I love this arrangement below from the chapter ‘The elements and principles of design’ showing the value of three different forms together.

The Eremurus gives the line, the sunflower provides round and the Alstroemeria gives the spray form.

In the chapter entitled ‘Flowers in a vase and handtieds’, there’s advice on arranging flowers in different types of containers.

And I love this purple handtied bouquet of hydrangea, lisianthus, Cool Water roses, statice and amaranthus.

In the ‘Contemporary design’ chapter, there’s this lovely example of a parallel design.

You’ll also find lots of step-by-step instructions in the book, like this ‘recipe’ below…

This stunning pedestal arrangement appears in the ‘Wedding flowers’ chapter.

So, if you’re looking for a Christmas present idea, either for yourself, friends or relatives, I would highly recommend putting ‘Flower Arranging’ on your list. It’s full of inspiration and techniques, plus helpful hints and tips too.

Judith’s book is available direct from the publisher Select Publisher ServicesAmazon and all good book retailers.

P.S.  If you’d like to know more about Judith, here’s an interview which I featured earlier this year.
