Waxflower is back in fashion, especially for wedding flowers…

Isn’t it funny how some flowers go in and out of fashion?  Waxflower is one of those flowers that falls into this category.

When I first started studying floristry over eight years ago, we used it as a ‘filler’ flower in arrangements.  But it was sometimes looked down upon as not being ‘in’.

Well, that’s now all changed and waxflower is back in fashion again, very much like gypsophila.

And it’s perfect for adding a vintage touch to floral arrangements as you can see from the designs I featured yesterday.

In colours ranging from white and cream to pale and deep pink, it’s generally available from November through to April.

Here are examples of three weddings where it’s been used beautifully…in buttonholes, table arrangements, circlets and bouquets.

If you’d like to know a little more about this dainty flower…well, it’s actually a shrub and its Latin name is Chamelaucium uncinatum.

And its common name, waxflower, comes from the waxy appearance of its delicate blooms.

What I love about it is the luminescence of its tiny buds and its citrusy scent.
