Today, I’m delighted to feature another member of the nationwide network of British cut flower growers, Flowers from the Farm.

And it’s the turn of James Cock from Flowers by Clowance

When did you start Flowers by Clowance and where are you based?

My late grandfather, Theo Cock, started our family business Clowance Wood Nurseries just over seventy years ago near Hayle in Cornwall.

When my father Alan married, the business relocated up the hill to its present location.

The current site is 2.5 acres of modern glass houses, 0.5 acres of poly tunnels and 30 acres of arable.

I rebranded the business ‘Flowers by Clowance’ when we launched our website in 2005.

What types of flowers do you grow?

Achillea, Ageratum, Alstroemeria, Anemones, Asters, Brodiaea, Bupleurum, Cornflowers, Dahlias, Delphiniums, Ranunculus, Statice, Stock, Sunflowers, Sweet Peas and Sweet William.

Where do you sell your flowers?

We sell our Cornish cut flowers via our two sales lorries which cover the whole of Cornwall, cold calling on all the major florists, hotels and convenience stores in the busiest towns.

We also sell our flowers direct to florists across the whole of the UK via our website using couriers for next day delivery, Tuesdays to Fridays.

In addition, I act as a wholesaler of English cut flowers on behalf of local cut flower growers here in Cornwall. I support all the local growers and sell their flowers and foliages to extend my range to twelve months of the year.

Our website offers Cornish flowers by post which are available to buy online.  And our nursery is also open to the general public six days a week.

Could you tell us about your Floristry Department and the services they offer?

Joi, our head florist, runs our floristry department with the help of my youngest sister Louise.

We also call upon the services of a couple of freelance florists at busy times. My mum who’s now retired, has been known to help out at busy periods but is now a full-time babysitter for the grandchildren!

Joi and her team work on over a hundred weddings a year, specialising in the vintage/ shabby chic look.

Funeral work is an important part of the floristry department’s work, in conjunction with local undertakers.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2012 & 2013?

To expand my direct sales business selling English cut flowers direct to florists across the UK.

I hope to be able to offer 20+ varieties of English foliages by the end of 2012, thanks to a new contact.

I also want to beat my own record of selling 27,000 bunches of Cornish daffodils in seven days direct to florists.

What is your favourite flower?

I adore Stock.  In our hay day as large scale growers, we grew over 100,000 stems per year.

  • As a freelance florist it is very important for me to have strong links with UK flower growers. I’ve used Clowance several times for wedding flowers and was delighted with the quality of the flowers I received at my workshop in Warwickshire. It’s fantastic to be able to offer UK grown flowers to customers and have a real point of difference with my business. Thank you James!
