Guildford Cathedral Flower Gala 2013 – Floristry Demonstration by Paula Pryke

Thank you for all your lovely feedback about my Guildford Cathedral Flower Gala blog posts so far.

Today, I’m featuring designs from Paula Pryke‘s floristry demonstration at a special evening for MyWaitrose customers.

The first arrangement which Paula made was a hand-tied bouquet of two different types of David Austin roses, alchemilla mollis and fountain grass.

Renowned for her use of colour and customising containers, Paula showed us the wonderful design below.

She’d placed one glass cube vase inside the other and filled the gap between them with sweets.

Then she placed a bouquet of complementary blooms into the inner vase.

Here’s another example below of a customised container, created using the same principle, only this time using coloured glass chips in layers.

And I loved the pale pink ice-cream inspired designs with sweet williams (and a flake!) and roses…

Paula said that it’s generally easier to arrange flowers in jugs as opposed to vases, as they have narrower necks.

Here, she used white stock, ‘Avalanche’ roses, alchemilla mollis, fountain grass and variegated pittosporum.

For the design below, she used purple vanda orchids.  She placed single heads in a tall glass vase, together with purple aluminium wire.

Then added water…

And here’s a close-up of the finished design.  It’s so simple, yet so effective…

To enjoy flowers at home, you don’t need to make a hand-tied bouquet with lots of different flowers and foliage.

As Paula illustrated, you could simply take two stems of a beautiful bloom like this agapanthus below and place them in glass bottles.

So, I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing Paula’s designs today.

If you’d like to keep up-to-date with her news, she’s on Twitter and Facebook.
