4 Self Care Tips for Florists in the Run-Up to Christmas

So the Christmas installations have started to go into hotels and restaurants meaning many florists have been doing all-nighters and then trying to catch up on their sleep the next day. Florist shops are gearing up for the festive period too. And freelancers are taking on jobs back-to-back.

It’s so important to look after yourself in the run-up to Christmas though. And just in case you need a little friendly reminder, here are four self care tips:


If you’ve got an early morning start, get everything organised the night before, so you can maximise the time in bed and minimise the time it takes for you to get out the door. Decide what you’re going to wear and have it hung up, ideally in the bathroom. If you’re planning on putting on make-up, make sure it’s within easy reach. (I put on a bare minimum, just to make sure that I don’t frighten anyone I see at the Flower Market!) Have your bag ready-packed and make sure your phone’s fully charged.

Now, I know I’m perhaps overly organised, but when I’ve got an early start I even get out what I’m going to eat for breakfast (Weetabix and hot milk, plus a cup of tea. There’s definitely no time to make porridge). And my boots are by the door. My aim is not to have to make any decisions at all at such an unearthly hour…in my zombie-like state.


Sleep is so very important for your emotional and physical well-being. If you find yourself burning the candle at both ends due to work commitments, consider a power nap. Or 10-15 minutes meditation which you can even do on the train, tube or bus. Just plug in your headphones and download an app like Headspace or Calm.


If you know you’re going to be working crazy hours and it’s very unlikely you’ll have time to pop out and get food, take something healthy to eat with you. Plus lots of snacks too. Perhaps nuts and fruit. Or bars like getbuzzing Banana Bars (they’re SO delicious and no, I’m not on commission!). And of course, drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated. Try and steer clear of six million cups of strong coffee  or tea every day! Try and drink the occasional decaf version or herbal tea.


Take a look at your diary and work out when you can fit in time over the next few weeks to recharge your batteries, so that you’ve got some energy left on Christmas Day. It’s very easy to just keep going and then find that when you do start to relax on Christmas Eve, that you get hit by a horrible lurgy. And then you spend the festive period just trying to get better.

Do whatever you find works best for you to unwind – whether that’s going to the gym, long walks, taking a warm bath, having a facial…whatever floats your boat.

The time we need to take care of ourselves the most is usually the time we do it the least. Please do look after yourself in the run-up to Christmas guys…
