Christmas Classes at the McQueens Flower School in London

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending a special Christmas Preview Event at the McQueens Flower School in London. This year, for the very first time, they’re running Christmas classes at their Bethnal Green HQ and the event was a taster of the kind of arrangements that will be part of the classes.

Here are the details:

Especially for florists, they’re holding an intensive four day workshop, covering all areas of floral design for Christmas, including a luxurious wreath, opulent garland and festive table.

ONE DAY CHRISTMAS MASTERCLASS | Various dates in November & December

For those looking for a lovely way to get into the festive spirit, there are one day classes focusing on making a Christmas wreath and designing a Christmas table.

For full details and to book your place, please visit the McQueens website.

Read on now for a little look behind the scenes at the new classroom at their Flower School, the abundant selection of seasonal flowers and foliage, and wonderful tuition by Diana.

We created two designs at the event, a door wreath and a table arrangement.

On to a ready-made blue pine wreath, Diana showed us how to supplement and add lushness to the design with additional foliage. I decided on a very natural style wreath, so added more blue pine and berried eucalyptus.

You can see the finished result below. Can you tell that I adore berried eucalyptus?! I also added cinnamon sticks in bundles and wrapped with natural twine, whole walnuts glued in bunches and groups of pine cones in various sizes. Mine was by far the most muted colour palette of all the attendees’ designs!

Many of the others chose to add red berries in the form of real or artificial ilex, cinnamon bundles wrapped in bright red ribbon, plus whole and sliced dried oranges. If you’d like to see their wreaths, simply click here to view the wonderful video, created by Duncan their very talented Social Media Manager.

Our second design was a festive table arrangement in a low, clear glass dish. Floral foam was placed into the dish and hidden from view with sprigs of blue pine. Then a white candle was added. And you can see the technique Diana used in the image immediately below.

Blue pine and Scots pine, red skimmia and Red Naomi roses were arranged in the floral foam.

Diana also added small bundles of dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, crab apples and cymbidium orchids.

And here’s my finished table arrangement…

Thank you to Diana and Duncan for such a wonderful day! It was so lovely to spend time ‘in the flow’ creating these two designs, enjoying the intoxicating scent of pine, cinnamon and dried orange slices, whilst nibbling away on mince pies. It really is starting to feel a LOT like Christmas!

P.S. If you’ve not yet discovered the McQueens Instagram account and YouTube channel, do take a peek…they’re incredible!
