A selection of brand new Online Classes has just been launched by floral designer Joseph Massie. And I’m delighted today to feature an exclusive interview with Joseph!
Many congratulations on your newly launched Online Classroom! Could you tell us about the different types of classes available?
Thank you, Rona! With the release of our very first online courses, it was so important to me to avoid creating courses that were filled with lots of pretty flowers, lots of “fluff” … but well … not much else!
I wanted the courses to be really useful for flower lovers, students and florists out there today, and as such I’ve designed the courses to be filled to the brim with techniques and packed with sustainable mechanics. Most importantly, the courses hone in on the supporting theory – to ensure that each and every course ensures that you can build upon the learning, and enhance your own practice further still.
I’m afraid you won’t find any meditations on flowers, or any whimsical stories in the courses … I think the floral industry is going through a really tough time at the moment, and as such it was very much my intention for these courses to be as helpful, as practical, and as detailed as possible.
This first course offering is very much a sample of my fifteen plus years of floral education, and each course is structured in a way so that each course contains as much commercially viable knowledge as we could possibly include. With this in mind, I decided to include six individual courses, covering a range of classical and contemporary floral designs.
The six courses we’re offering are as follows:
- The Classic Centrepiece
- The Cascading Garland
- The Classic Bridal Bouquet
- The Textured Vase
- The Wired Flower Crown
- The Floral Clutch
All six courses are available to purchase individually. Or you can purchase them as one full course, The Complete Collection, which has a lovely discount included. The Complete Collection is also available to access with a payment plan too, over six months. We’ve called this The Complete Collection Journey.
Alongside the courses, I’ve also released two e-books, packed with supporting theory. The first covering The Principles & Elements of Floral Design. And the second on The Golden Ratio & 3:5:8 within Floral Design.
Who are your online classes suitable for?
It’s my hope that absolutely any flower lover will be able to take something from our courses. We’ve designed them for both those just starting out on their floral journeys, and for professional floral designers too, who are maybe looking to refresh their techniques, or adventure into something they haven’t previously explored.
They range from the more commercial courses – such as the Classic Bridal Bouquet or The Classic Centrepiece – to the more contemporary and technical – such as The Textured Vase or The Floral Clutch. It’s worth noting that all of our courses have been designed with sustainability in mind too. They’re all foam free, and focus on minimising the inclusion of single use plastics.
What format are the classes?
All of our courses are available to purchase all year round, and once purchased, you’ll be able to access them anytime, and you can review the courses as many times as you wish. They’re entirely self-paced – which again was important to us, as from my own teaching I know that most people like to learn at their own pace.
Each course is has been designed as a comprehensive package consisting of:
- Lifetime access to your courses and any future updates
- A comprehensive Instructional Video (ranging from 15 minutes to 40 minutes long, depending on the complexity of the course)
- The Flower List
- The Sundries List
- The Step By Step Guide
- The Substitutions List
- The Floral Glossary
- Access to our private, supportive global floral community
We want everyone who takes our courses to be really supported during their study with us. So we’ve put so much work into these supporting documents to ensure they’re as thorough, and as useful as possible.
What type of support do you offer students?
With every course we offer access to our private, supportive floral forum, where students can make connections, ask questions, and access support as they progress through their learning. We also have our popular Resources, which are completely free of charge floral education resources, which we publish a few times a month on our website.
Our Resources have been curated strictly with one goal in mind – to inspire, empower, and connect flower lovers around the world. Through our Resources, we share a selection of exclusive step by step guides, articles, podcasts, look books, mood boards and more, each packed with floral hints and tips. You don’t have to purchase any of our courses to sign up to the Resources, and actually, you can sign up here to receive each update, plus an exclusive unpublished Resource – The Flower Care & Conditioning Guide – directly into your inbox.
How do people book your online courses?
Our courses are available at www.learnjosephmassie.com. And as it’s the first week our courses are out into the World, we’ve a few discounts available too!
From today, and until midnight on 7th July, we’re offering:

It’s worth mentioning too, that this is our very first offering of courses … and we do have a second collection due in a few months also! Watch. This. Space!
