Last year, I travelled to Somerset to visit the Sabine Darrall Floristry School to attend a one day Styling workshop. And what a truly inspirational day it was…!
The school is nestled in the tranquil village of Yarlington, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Most of the students had already attended courses with Sabine before and there was such a wonderful, friendly atmosphere.
During the workshop, we were to create and style a boutonniere, tablecentre and hand-tied bouquet for a mini photo shoot. There was such an abundant and fabulous selection of flowers and foliage for us to choose from including peonies, ranunculus, roses, forget-me-nots, scabious, Persian fritillaries, hellebores, tulips, Icelandic poppies, guelder rose and pear blossom! And Sabine had also brought in some cuttings of love-lies-bleeding from her little garden outside the school.
I loved Sabine’s teaching style. She showed us first how to create each design. Then, as we were making ours, she came around to each of us and gave us guidance and encouragement.
First, Sabine demonstrated how to make a boutonniere.
And here’s a close-up of her beautiful finished design.
Then, it was our turn.
Next up, she showed us how to make a tablecentre, using chicken wire.
Isn’t her arrangement gorgeous?
Here are some close-ups.
And here’s my design below.
Last, but not least, Sabine showed us how to make a hand-tied bouquet.
And here’s the one which I made.
There were several different things which made the day so very special for me. Learning how to make three floral designs in a style I’d never tried before…a natural, informal style..was revelationary!
Beautiful images for a florist are SO important, especially when you’re just starting out in the industry. And Sabine knows a lot about photography. I picked up lots of hints and tips on how to style my photos including advice on setting up a special area to take images, using wallpaper as a background, painting boards to add colour, texture and interest, plus the use of lighting. Needless-to-say, the following weekend, I went to our nearest DIY store to stock up…!
She also took us outside to a nearby field to take photographs, using the local church as a background and its old, weathered doors (which you can see in the photo above).
Sabine has many years of floristry experience having previously worked in London…and it certainly showed. She’s so passionate about teaching floristry and is bang up-to-date on all the latest trends as she does wedding work.
I really can’t thank her enough for such a very special day. I learnt so much and was still on a high the next morning! So, if you’re looking for floristry courses, do take a look at the Sabine Darrall Flower School website. And then you too can benefit from Sabine’s wisdom and inspirational teaching style. Courses include Luxe Wedding Design, Floral Accessories and Large Scale Design.
