Earlier this year, I was delighted to be invited to attend one day of florist Paula Pryke‘s Four Day Intensive Course in London.
Some of you may know that I used to work with Paula. It was so lovely being back at her studio in Islington…and I felt like I’d never been away!
This is the first of five blog posts covering the wonderful arrangements which Paula and her colleague, Anita, demonstrated to the students that day.
Paula said that she gets a lot of inspiration for her floral designs from nature.
But this first table arrangement was actually inspired by some beautiful Japanese sweets, which she had received.
I love her use of Japanese washi tape in candy colours to decorate the glass vase, combined with the different textures and tones of the spring blooms.
Here’s a step-by-step of how Paula created the arrangement.
First, she started with the foliage…
Then added guelder rose and astrantia…
Pink Cloni ranunculus, purple clematis, blue agapanthus, pale lilac sweet peas, green roses, white lysimachia and yellow tulips were then added…
Paula’s very well-known in the floristry industry for her signature style of using colour in her designs.
She recommended to the students that when you’re using lots of different colours that it’s best to leave out white flowers, as your eye is usually drawn towards them first.
She did say however that it’s generally ok to mix white and pink blooms in an arrangement.
And with this particular design, if you wanted it to feature only pastel shades, you’d simply leave out the bright yellow tulips.
