I’m delighted to feature today a selection of beautiful floral-inspired wedding and christening accessories from Greek-based, Lila.
I came across the company when I visited the Designer Wedding Show at Battersea Park in London in October. And it was the headdress above which initially drew my attention to their stand.
I spoke to Sofia who was at the show and she very kindly answered a few questions for me:
When did you start the business and where are you based?
We opened our first workshop of handcrafted wedding and christening accessories in Athens in 1994, and this year we launched our new design studio in London. But my family has a very long history of craftsmanship that spans over 70 years.
Could you tell us how you make your floral bridal accessories?
My flowers are hand-sculpted using a clay-like material. I like working very early in the morning, when it’s still calm and quiet. The light is modest and hopeful, my hands rested and mind clear.
I usually start with an idea I’ve been working in my head for a long time, but as I’m making something, it evolves and changes, until it feels just perfect.
It takes a few days for the material to dry. After that I can arrange the flowers and complete the design, turning them into wearable accessories.
Where do you get your floral inspiration for your designs?
Nature, of course! I love living in a big city, but your environment becomes quickly familiar and in your daily routines, streets or even parks become simply your way to somewhere.
Since I started making flowers, my whole perception has changed. I find myself stopping every so often discovering little flower gems popping out of wall cracks, hiding under a bush or at the edge of a pavement. It’s fascinating!
There is so much beauty around, you just need to open your eyes to see it!
Can brides request a specific flower and/or colour palette?
Absolutely, we are at our best when asked to create bespoke designs! I can make a variety of ‘real’ flowers and I always love to try new ones, or create something completely imaginary. I make my own colours as well and can match any colour scheme, theme or style.
Where can people buy your designs?
People can contact us via our website, where you can find a selection of designs to choose from or visit our studio to try things on.
If you’re based in London, we’re also happy to meet you in the comfort of your own home, or a suitable venue.
We’ll talk about your theme, style and ‘that dress’ in advance and bring along samples, materials and ideas. You can place an order via email, phone or in person.
Do you have a favourite flower?
I’m obsessed with detail, which I think comes across in my designs.
So, it has to be lily of the valley. I’m enchanted by its finesse and elegant scent, its delicate transparency just like fine porcelain and how the little bells are tactfully arranged along the branch in perfect harmony and proportion with each other. I can sit and look at it for hours, as you can tell…
What are your plans for 2012?
We’re preparing our new collection to launch at the Designer Wedding Show (10th-12th February 2012) and a couple of very exciting projects and collaborations that we’ll be announcing in January. Stay tuned!
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading all about Lila. As well as these accessories adorned with flowers, they also make headdresses adorned with pearls, crystals and even feathers.
So do take a look at their website. Especially if someone proposed to you this Christmas!
