I hope you had a lovely weekend…
On Saturday, I took it easy after a busy end of the week and chilled out in the evening in front of a lovely fire, watching Strictly (Denise van Outen was sensational) and XFactor (I’m in awe of Ella Henderson!)
Then Sunday was a day of yoga and some ‘flowery’ activity, which I’ll tell you all about on Saturday in Flowerona reflects.
To start off this week, we have an interview with the very talented florist, Bex Morgan of Blush Floral Design.
Could you tell us what prompted you to become a florist?
Walks in the countryside when I was little, with my Mum and Nana, consisted of me holding a small wild flower book and wearing a pair of flower fairy wings. I was pretty obsessed with anything floral from an early age.
When I went to college I wanted to be the next big fashion designer and ended up working in many retail outlets as a visual merchandiser and window dresser.
As time went on, my love and passion for flowers grew and I eventually enrolled in a course at Merrist Wood College in Guildford. I loved every minute and knew I had found the perfect dream job.
I then went on to work for an amazing florist, Susanna of Tiger Rose, who took me under her wing. I was pretty certain, and still am, that she is made of magic.
I learnt so much from her and was so inspired that eventually I started Blush.
When did you start your business and where are you based?
I started Blush in the summer of 2009 and soon after that Beth (my Mum) joined me.
We work from a very rustic workshop/shed at the bottom of the garden, surrounded by all our home-grown blooms.
Blush is based in Farnham in Surrey. However, we’re not adverse to a bit of travelling and have just been booked for a wedding next year in a Scottish castle.
What kind of floristry services do you offer?
We specialise in creating floral designs for weddings, parties and special events.
We offer a very personal service right from the first meeting. We hold the initial consultation at our family home, where it’s relaxed with tea and cake…always with tea and cake.
We listen to what each couple wants rather than pushing a trend or our own personal taste onto them. They also have us on call around the clock and I have become very close to many of our clients over the years.
We use a local wholesaler who we have a great relationship with and sometimes we even take the client to see where their flowers are from. They’re then able to visualise and get inspired about their flowers.
Could you tell us about some of your recent or future commissions?
I have lots of exciting new bits and bobs coming up in the New Year!
There’s one particular commission that I’m bursting to tell everyone about, but it’s all under wraps for now.
How would you describe your style?
We always listen to the client and let them lead. But I guess over time we’ve developed a certain style and it’s been described as ‘country vintage’.
We get a lot of inspiration from traditional English country blooms and vintage props, so I can see how that has come about.
What are your plans for the remainder of 2012?
Lots of beautiful winter weddings and a few exciting projects with other suppliers too.
We’re just so happy to see Blush grow year by year and we can’t wait to see what 2013 brings us.
What is your favourite flower?
This is such a hard question for a florist!
I would have to say the sweet pea. It was my Granddad’s favourite flower and he grew them every year, filling his garden with such an amazing scent.
I now grow them myself and they always evoke such happy memories for me.
Many thanks to Bex for all her help in compiling today’s blog post, which I hope has brightened up your Monday.
If you’d like to keep up-to-date with Bex’s news, she’s on Twitter and Facebook.
P.S. I adore the pinky/orange rose in the image above…stunning!
