I’m delighted to feature today an interview with florist Nikki Tibbles of Wild at Heart, together with images of her beautiful flower arrangements.
When did you start Wild at Heart and where are you based?
I started Wild at Heart nineteen years ago in 1993. Initially I was working from a rented studio in Southwark when a note came through my door inviting tenders for a new flower shop in Piers Gough’s Turquoise Island.
I delivered some flowers to the address they gave which was the council’s Waste Department and I got a call inviting me for an interview and was given the keys there and then.
Could you tell us more about your company and the floristry services you offer?
Apart from providing sumptuous bouquets from our shops, we also offer a bespoke event, wedding and contracts service, where we ensure that every client receives a unique and personal experience, whether they’re looking for a single elegant bouquet or want to create an elaborate event, we’re able to help.
We also offer a complete bespoke styling service where we can provide everything from linen for the tables to lighting, and of course fabulous floral arrangements.
We’ve just launched Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart… at Home which is our online interiors shop. I’ve always loved to be playful with my interiors and over the years I’ve been asked by clients to get involved in much more than just their flowers, helping them to style their homes and events.
So, it just seemed a natural progression to launch Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart…at Home. I source all the interior products myself and I only buy things that I would have in my own home and that I love.
A great friend of mine, photographer Martyn Thompson taught me that everything should have a reason for being and this is something that I stick by when it comes to interiors.
And everything which is sold in …at Home has a direct relation to flowers in one way or another.
Where do you get inspiration for your floral designs?
A lot of inspiration comes from the flowers themselves and the different seasons.
However, I’m heavily influenced by art and fashion as points of reference when coming up with ideas.
I also use my love of interiors, often taking the interior of someone’s home or a venue as inspiration for the floral installations that Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart creates.
How would you describe your style?
Eclectic, assorted, colourful and chaotic – although always organised chaotic!
What is your favourite flower?
My favourite flowers are roses. They’re such old-fashioned, luxurious flowers which are beautifully scented. I also love the way in which they slowly fade.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been so many but from it all I treasure the incredible people that I have meet through work, who have become life-long friends such as my dear friend, Betty Jackson.
What are your plans and hopes for the future?
We have so many brilliant things happening at the moment that I’m very excited about the future.
We recently launched our new website which now offers everything our shops do and so much more for our customers – easy online ordering and nationwide delivery, Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart… at Home, details on all the services we offer such as weddings and contract flowers, and our blog is regularly kept up-to-date with exciting Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart goings-on.
We also have some amazing weddings and events that are coming up this year which I’m very much looking forward to working on, as well as working on some fantastic collaborations with institutions such as The National Gallery.
My hope is that I can continue to create beautiful and inspirational floral displays and get the opportunity to carry on working with fabulous clients.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to improve their flower arranging skills?
Come and work at Nikki Tibbles Wild at Heart and learn from the best!
