Recently, I was contacted by artist Annie O’Brien Gonzales.
And today I’m delighted to feature an interview with Annie, together with a selection of her beautiful floral paintings.
When did you start painting flowers and where are you based?
I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and I began full-time professional painting in 2007.
I went to art school earlier in life, but then went into the ‘real world’ and left my painting behind for many years.
My very first impulse when I started painting again was to paint flowers.
I just love painting. So, at times, I will paint landscapes because it’s so beautiful here. And I’ve ventured into some abstracts.
But my first love is flower painting.
Could you tell us about your particular style of painting?
I’ve been called a colorist and an ‘intuitive’ painter. And I guess I would agree with both of those.
I’ve studied painting with some great teachers, but always go back to my style of painting.
I paint from life, which much of the year here means buying flowers. But in the summer, I have the luxury of finding flowers to paint here in Santa Fe or the surrounding area.
Since I’m not a realist painter, I ‘pose’ my flowers but don’t use a formal still life set-up. I take my color cues from the flowers, but once I start painting it takes over!
Could you tell us about some of your recent commissions?
I enjoy painting commissions.
Most people just give me the dimensions that they need and which of my paintings resonate with them so I have an idea of what they like and I come up with the painting for them. Usually I will paint two or three choices for them.
Recently, I painted several paintings for a home being remodeled in California.
The owner gave me an idea of her color scheme and I painted several still life paintings for their kitchen including ‘Fruit with Pansies’. It was such fun.
What are your plans for the remainder of 2013?
In the coming months, I want to paint a series based on some of my favorite flowers…peonies, roses, hollyhocks and others, creating albums of flowers I love.
I’m also going to California to paint for a month this summer and plan to paint the wonderful flowers that are always blooming there.
And I plan to paint houses with gardens…something I’ve wanted to do for some time.
Many thanks to Annie for all her help in compiling today’s blog post.
