Last month at the Country Living Fair in London, I met the very talented Emma Hardicker. I was so taken by Emma’s beautiful screen prints and her passion for all things floral!
Today’s post features just a few of her designs. The first four are limited edition prints, followed by a selection of her cards.
Emma very kindly answered a few questions for me:
When did you start your business and where are you based?
Well I left my job in October 2008 after a year of deliberating whether I should just go for it! It took me around six months of drawing and experimenting to come up with my first collection of designs, which I hand printed on to cards.
I’m based in Moseley, which is a very creative area in Birmingham. We have a local Moseley Arts Market, held on the fourth Saturday of each month, which is great for buying hand-made goods.
I do all my creative designing working from my hut/studio in the garden.
Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
My inspiration has always come from my surroundings. When my studio and I moved to Birmingham in 2009, my work became more floral-based as I was situated in a beautiful garden. Looking out of my window, I could see spring flowers such as daffodils and fritillaries.
I never really had much interest in flowers before, but having such a strong craving to draw, they became my inspiration. And now I’m a flower lover. When designing, my aim is to produce something fresh and different, to make sure it’s my own style.
What are your plans for 2011?
I have too many plans to squeeze into 2011. But I plan to move to Oxford by the end of the year and set up a studio/shop.
Also more designs and I’ve just completed four designs based on the seasons and I want to produce these as packs of cards. Plus create some repeat designs for fabrics.
The next event I will be at is the RHS Flower Show in Malvern in May. I’ll be there from the 13th-15th.
Do you have a favourite flower?
Yes, a snake’s head fritillary. They’re so unusual with their checked pattern, but if I could have two flowers, l also love roses. They have a classic look and remind me of being in English country gardens.
As well as limited edition prints and cards, Emma also has paintings and a range of cushions available to buy from her website.
I very much look forward to following Emma’s work in the future and if you’d like to keep up-to-date with her news, she’s on Twitter.
