Back in September at the trade show, Top Drawer, I had the pleasure of meeting Sally Scaffardi and her business partner, Heather Turner.
I’m delighted to feature a selection of Sally’s stunning floral-inspired greeting cards today, together with a Q&A:
When did you start your business and where are you based?
Heather and I started the greetings card business Sally Scaffardi Design in March this year.
The company is an add-on to our floral wedding invitation business, Contemporary Stationery Design. With the wedding invitation business established and doing well, we had more time to devote to a new venture.
I’d been designing greetings cards for The Art File for several years and felt that I had an insight into the type of designs which sell well, but wanted the artistic freedom to try out new ideas. So I decided on the self-publishing route.
It’s been hard work but great fun. Heather, my friend and business partner, comes from a business and customer service background so it works really well, as she handles all that side giving me the time to work on the designing.
We’re both workaholics and totally committed to delivering quality in design and service to our customers.
Where do you get your floral inspiration for your designs?
We work from a studio at my home in rural Nottinghamshire which is lovely and peaceful.
Much of my floral inspiration comes from the garden at home. I’ve always loved flowers and gardens since I was a child. My mother is a passionate gardener which I think must have rubbed off on me.
I love interior design and started my wall art business, Contemporary Wall Art seven years ago. The wall art is almost exclusively floral-based but in a contemporary, slightly abstract way, designed very much with the modern interior in mind.
The wall art business has been great for me and has enabled me to branch out into the wedding stationery and greetings card direction. I also have a publisher/distributor for my open edition artwork which is sold in numerous high street and online companies worldwide.
What are your plans for the remainder of 2011 and 2012?
Following on from our success at Top Drawer this year (Best New Product in Stationery and Greetings), we want to concentrate on promoting the greetings cards and stationery business for the next few months and turning the Sally Scaffardi Design website into an ecommerce site for the public enabling them to purchase greetings cards, gift wrap, art prints and notebooks online. We’re also looking into using some of the designs on new products.
I’ve been invited to be the artist columnist in Art Business Today magazine for the next twelve months, so that is my most immediate challenge. Art Business Today is published by The Fine Art Trade Guild and is the UK’s leading magazine for art and framing business professionals.
Do you have a favourite flower?
Roses and peonies. I love the number of different roses and the way that no two roses even on the same plant are the same.
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing Sally’s stunning designs…
