‘Wow!‘ is what I said when I downloaded photographer Katie Spicer‘s stunning images of flowers yesterday, for today’s blog post.
I first discovered Katie’s work last month when I saw a tweet on Twitter from the florist McQueens. It led me to contacting Katie to see if she would like to be featured on Flowerona.
Read on to find out more about this very talented lady…
How did your specialism in fine art flower photography come about?
I have a background in plants and flowers, as I studied Horticulture and then went on to get a degree in Plant Sciences.
I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of flowers. There is so much to love about them, the colours, the delicacy of their petals, their fragrance.
To combine this infatuation with my love of photography seemed the ideal thing to do.
I think when you already have a passion for something it makes photographing it that much more special and I hope that comes through in my work.
What is your photography style?
You may notice that I’m totally drawn to vibrant jewel colours. So you’ll see a lot of cool pinks, purples and blues of various shades in my work.
I would say my style is quite contemporary. I like to keep my images clean, soft and simple.
My photographs have been described as having ‘an understated simplicity that enhances the natural beauty of the flowers’.
Could you tell us about your new online shop for your floral art?
I have just ‘opened’ my new online shop selling limited edition prints of my images.
I’m very excited as it has been a work in progress for rather longer than intended! It was important to me to source the highest quality materials.
They are all printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag fine art paper, which gives a real depth of colour to my images, signed by my fair hand and mounted.
You do a lot of work with florists as well, tell us about that…
Yes, I also have a commercial photography business and it made sense to me to specialise in shooting floristry and to work in the floral industry.
I immediately have a shared passion with my clients and that makes for a great start to us creating amazing images together.
Working on location in the shop or flower field and even weddings before the guests arrive keeps my week nice and varied.
What kind of commissions are you involved in with florists?
I’ve just finished shooting images for a new website for McQueens. That has been a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see the finished results.
Talks are also in the pipeline about shooting a book with the lovely Matt from The Urban Flower Company.
And I’m also shooting a portfolio for a new up and coming florist. So watch this space!
What is your favourite flower?
Without a doubt, the Sarah Bernhardt peony. I get totally and utterly lost in them every season. They are just the most exquisite flower in my opinion…the colour, the delicacy, the scent.
Our wedding invitation was a picture of a peony that I took especially and I had them in my hair on the day as well.
The fragrance of them will always take me back to my wedding day I think!
Thank you so much to Katie for all her help in compiling today’s blog post. Aren’t her photographs absolutely stunning…?!

Such amazing floral images, love them! Thanks Rona for posting x
Thank you Yelena! You’re very welcome… x
Thank you very much Yelena 🙂 x
Katie, these images are incredible 🙂 As a Flower Farmer, I am constantly taking pictures of the beauty in the Flower Field, and Shop, and obviously in the ‘vase’.
But I am invariably disappointed in the results, as the pics never reflect what I see!
Must find time (ha) to learn the craft! It would make such a difference.
Great article Rona 🙂
