What a lovely way to start the week…stunning brightly coloured floral designs from Fiona Douglas of Bluebellgray!
From cushions and wall hangings to lampshades, her translation of flowers on to fabric is absolutely beautiful.
I contacted Fiona, who’s based in Glasgow, to find out more about her background and plans for the future: –
When & why did you start Bluebellgray?
I started Bluebellgray in the summer of 2009. I’ve always wanted to work for myself. I love the freedom of making your own decisions and my dream has always been to make a living from my designs. Bluebellgray came out of this desire and my love of florals. Watercolour florals are something I specialised in when I was in art school and I always wanted to go back to them when I set up my business.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
For me nature is always my biggest inspiration. There is nothing more beautiful than real flowers in my opinion. The variety and beauty of flowers never fails to amaze me. Inspiration comes from everywhere – from walking past my local florist to the beautiful blossom tree that blooms outside my bedroom window in spring. (I need to design a collection around that tree one day!).
What is the most popular item that you sell?
My Poppy cushion is my most popular product. I think people like the purple/pink hues. (See below).
What is your favourite flower?
This is such a hard question!! I’m not sure I can narrow it down to one flower. It is a contest between peonies (they feature a lot in my designs), cornflowers, grape hyacinths and of course, bluebells! I’m getting married in June and I found the decision over what flowers to have more exciting than my dress. Peonies and cornflowers are going to feature a lot!
What are your plans for Bluebellgray for 2011?
I’m launching a small range of fabric in the spring and a new cushion collection. I’m also planning on doing more paper art prints to give people other options to have Bluebellgray designs in their homes. I’m trying to move things forward slowly but surely. I love it when my customers really connect to the designs. It really makes it all worthwhile.
I hope you’ve enjoyed finding out more about Fiona and her company, Bluebellgray.
