If you’ve seen my new Floristry Industry Resources Page, you may have read about a new podcast, which has recently been launched in the UK called Girl Flower. Above are the lovely ladies behind the microphones, Vic (left) from Ivy Amelia Florals and Jess (right) from Jessica Rose Flowers.
As I thought you may like to find out more about their podcast and its background, I got in touch with them. And this is the resulting interview…
Where did you both meet initially?
We met whilst freelancing, installing florals on a rooftop terrace bar in London. It was a super hot day, so we got to know each other whilst topping up on our Vitamin D and of course stopped for a sociable drink after the job was done! We have been in contact ever since, whether meeting on other freelance jobs or working alongside each other to create beautiful weddings.
What triggered you to start the podcast?
A huge love for flowers and the industry and a good chat! We saw that there weren’t any British voices on any flower podcasts so wanted to reach out to our community over here. We are both podcast fans, saw the gap and took the leap! Vic sent a text message saying “I’ve had an idea… you need to say Yes!” And that was that, decision was made.
Who is the podcast target audience?
Florists, growers and flower lovers. We aim to speak to our whole industry. And although we have only spoken to florists so far, we have some great interviews with growers coming up soon! Hopefully we’ll be able to visit them in their beautiful gardens and share some pictures.
What’s been your aim in creating the podcast?
We hope that we can build a strong community of listeners who take inspiration and find guidance from our wonderful interviewees. We are so inspired by their stories so hope they are too. And we want to bring all of the flower industry together to give support to one another. Our ethos is community over competition.
How has your podcasting journey been so far? And what’s been your favourite part?
It’s been incredible and we have been so overwhelmed with how many people want to speak with us. We have loved the interview process so much. All of our interviewees have been so candid, open and inspiring…and being able to see their workspaces has been UNBELIEVABLE!
How has the Coronavirus impacted on the podcast schedule and recording?
Jess jetted off to Australia at the beginning of the talk about Covid-19. We hadn’t really worked out how to record an episode without being in person, so we took a short mid season sabbatical to iron out the details. Thankfully Zoom has been invaluable since the lockdown was put into place, so we can continue to record with multiple voices through that. People have been more than happy to get involved that way and we shall continue with this until life begins to get back to normal.
What are your plans for the next 12 months?
We will be moving forward with more chats in a similar format via the podcast. And we will be launching our YouTube channel soon. This will have informal group chat videos with lots of different industry folk who are already connected in one way or another with their love of flowers. Our website has gone live with some simple blog posts and sneak peeks into the work spaces of our wonderful podcast guests. These will get better with practice. There are other plans in the pipeline too and we will talk more about these when this crisis is over and we can actually make concrete plans. Keep listening and you’ll find out more.
If you’d like to listen to their podcast, simply head over to the Girl Flower website. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading Vic and Jess’s story, and that you have a lovely Easter weekend.
