I hope you had a lovely weekend. I was so happy last week to see that some of the stands at the Dutch floriculture trade fairs that I visited were displaying one of my very favourite flowers, the ranunculus. I adore their layers upon layers of delicate petals. So, to start off the week, I thought I’d share with you some images of this wonderful bloom, which I captured whilst I was in Holland…
Aren’t they just heavenly? The ones above are the standard type of ranunculus. And the variety below, which its frilly petals, is called Pon-Pon.
One of the things that makes ranunculus special for me is that they’re only available for certain months of the year…generally November through to May/June. So, it’s always such a lovely surprise when they first reappear at New Covent Garden Flower Market. If you’d like to find out more about the ranunculus, you may like to read my Product Profile Report which I recently wrote for the Market about this wonderful flower. In the meantime, please do look out for them the next time that you’re in your local high street as ranunculus are generally only available from florists’ shops. If your florist doesn’t have any, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you asked them if they’d be happy to source some for you. Then, once you take them home, you too will be able to see how their delicate petals slowly unfurl and become almost translucent as they age. They’re one of the very few flowers, in my opinion, that look more even more beautiful, the older they get.
