In honour of the 90th birthday of HM The Queen, florist Flora Starkey has decorated London Gate at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. And I absolutely loved its almost ethereal nature!
The design creates six ‘crowning’ moments at the top of each of the six gate pillars and has been planted with seasonal English favourites such as roses, clematis and foxgloves. The flowers and foliage spill over the gate pillars and climb up the iron railings, dressing the gates beautifully.
What initially escaped my attention, until it was remarked upon by a friend, was the incredible construction work which the design had required. Due to the entrance being listed, a metal framework had been created to hover just above the pillars. Below you can see how the framework was weighted into place. Genius!
Many congratulations to Flora on creating such a stunning installation and well done to all the wonderful suppliers : Bloomfield at New Covent Garden Flower Market, The Land Gardeners, Peter Beale Roses, Hortus Loci, Tendercare and Thorncroft Nurseries.
